Compass Healthcare Collaborative is a provider-led, patient-focused 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to advancing sustainable healthcare transformation. Established in 2004 through a partnership between the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA) and the Iowa Medical Society (IMS), Compass brings together a diverse group of stakeholders – including providers, hospitals, payers, employers, community organizations, and government partners – to drive meaningful, system-wide improvement.
Through this multi-stakeholder approach, Compass is uniquely positioned to accelerate the adoption of best practices, leverage data to inform decision-making, and foster collaboration across the healthcare ecosystem. Its work is focused on improving the quality, safety, and value of care, both within Iowa and as a model for broader national impact.
Compass is guided by a clear mission to lead sustainable healthcare transformation in quality, safety, and value, and a vision of a collaborative culture of continuous improvement that drives more effective and efficient care. Its efforts are grounded in four core priorities: raising the standard of care, aligning and equipping providers for continuous improvement, engaging communities to support long-term transformation, and promoting data-driven performance improvement.
Compass is governed by a 12-member Board of Directors representing a broad cross-section of healthcare and community leadership, including hospitals, physicians, nursing, pharmacy, long-term care, health systems, business, and performance improvement experts. This diverse governance structure provides a strong foundation for collaboration and strategic influence across the state. The organization is led by a President/CEO who oversees a staff of 15 and an $8 million operating budget. The position is fully remote but requires Iowa residency.
At its core, Compass combines cross-sector leadership, data-driven strategy, and a collaborative model to advance measurable improvements in care – positioning the organization as a trusted convener and catalyst for healthcare transformation.
